Apiary Field Day 2016




The Apiary Field Day has been scheduled for Sunday, August 14th from 2:00pm to 6:00pm at the Quicksall Farmstead in rural Stewardson.  

The schedule is as follows:
2:00pm Social Hour
3:00pm Visit the Apiary
4:30pm Potluck Dinner
6:00pm Head home with Great Memories!

What to bring:
1. Your own veil or bee protective gear (mandatory for going into the beeyard) 
2. Meat/Side dish and dessert to share. 
3. Crossroads Beekeepers will provide plates, plasticware, glasses, ice tea and water. 
4. If you are bringing children, they are welcome to bring a fishing pole to have fun at the pond, and they can also pet our pygmy goats.

From U of I Extension in Effingham:
1. Leave U of I Ext. going S on Wenthe Dr. (.2mi)
2. Turn Right onto Evergreen Ave. (.3mi)
3. Turn Right onto Keller Dr/IL Rte 32/33 (3.8mi)
4. Turn Right on IL Rte 32 going N towards Stewardson (7.7mi)
5. Turn Right on CR 400, which is .6 mi N of the Stewardson Citgo Gas Station. (2.9mi)
6. Turn Left on 3100 E (.4mi)
7. Turn Left at the top of the hill by the mail boxes and bee hives.
You're at the Quicksall Farmstead.

From Casey's General Store in Neoga:
1. Go S from Casey's on Rte 45 (3.6mi)
2. Turn Right onto the Centerline Rd, which is CR 400 N (4.8mi)
3. Turn Right onto 3100N (.4mi)
4. Turn Left at the top of the hill by the mail boxes and bee hives.
You're at the Quicksall Farmstead.

IQI Summer Open House Mating Yard Tour

Cost is $10 per person on location.

If the weather is poor, call to confirm the event before traveling. Bring protective clothing to wear into the bee yard. Bring a lawn chair if you wish to sit. The presentation will be casual with lots of time for Q&A. If time permits, guests may be able to practice grafting larva.

Feeding during honey production

-1 qt of 50/50 syrup
-1 to 2 tsp Pro Health or Honey-B-Healthy
-12lb granulated sugar
-3 to 6 cups pollen substitute

Mix first three ingredients with enough pollen substitute to make a dry batter.
The bees raise brood on this but do not put it in honey stores.

July 2016 Meeting

The July meeting will be held tomorrow July 11 @ 6:30 pm at the U of I extension in Effingham. We will be announcing the date for our August field day.  Dave will be talking about beekeeping gadgets.  Please bring a drink or snack to share.  Invite a friend.  Everyone is welcome to attend.  It is free & open to the public.  Hope to see you there!!
